Asian Elephant Reproduction

The bull Asian elephant will reach its sexual maturity after 10-14 years, and cow elephant after 8-9 years. Sexual maturity may be delayed for several years during drought or periods of high population density.

One calf is born every 3-4 years after a pregnancy lasting about 22 months. This is a relatively long gestation period in the animal world. At birth, the calf weighs about 100 kg (220 lb).

An infant elephant is cared for by its mother and other females called "aunties" in the herd. The infant suckles for 3-4 years.
